In just over 8 years together, Brickwork Lizards has built a reputation as one of the most formidable live acts on the Oxford scene and the festival circuit. The group’s fans range from the most committed of Arabic music aficionados to fans of high-octane gypsy dance. Following a frenetic 2013 playing at no fewer than seven festivals, this eclectic ‘Turkabilly hip hop’ collective is set to take the World Music scene by storm.
Brickwork Lizards is the brainchild of Egyptian singer/Oud player Tarik Beshir and rapper Tom O’Hawk. With a shared passion for Middle Eastern melodies, delta blues and the harmony groups of the 1930s and 40s, they formed a band that mixes the old and the new, the Eastern and the Western, to powerful effect.
Their recordings evoke the fiery spirit of Eastern Europe, sultry nights on the Arabian sea and the Speakeasy bars of prohibition-era America but it’s in their incendiary live performances that the group’s powerful dynamics come to the fore, served up by a troupe of inspired, talented musicians. Their music has passion and excitement that will stir the soul and send shivers down the spine.
Their album ‘Zaman’ is out now and the band is in the process of record their next album for release in late 2014.
