Mac Traynham is a deep-rooted native of Virginia, born in the Tidewater area and growing up with musical parents in Oxford, North Carolina. He started paying clawhammer banjo is 1977 and, moving to Grayson County in 1980, felt compelled to learn to play the tunes of the region in a recognizable "local" style. He began winning prizes for his banjo playing at the local Fiddlers' Conventions. Subsequently, he took up old time fiddling as well and began playing for local dances and benefits. Since the 1980s, Mac has been active with his music in both a professional and a non-professional way. He has been on the staff of several renowned old time music camps over the years including Augusta Heritage Workshops in Elkins, West Virginia, Mars Hill Blue Ridge Old Time week in North Carolina and The Swannonnoa Gathering near Asheville, North Carolina.
